Weight Gain in the 2nd Trimester

Sep 26, 2022

Maintaining a good weight is necessary when you are pregnant. Being underweight or overweight may have health complications for you and your baby because over-weight gain increases the possibility of diabetes during pregnancy. It is advisable to have your doctor's guidance to know more about the right weight gain when you are pregnant.

Which Trimester Do You Gain More Weight?

Most pregnant women may gain more weight during the second trimester. It is essential to plump up for a healthy pregnancy. Your weight has gained not because of only your baby's growth, but because your body is also enlarging and developing extra body tissue.

The quantity of water in your body gradually increases in the second trimester than the fat content proportion. Also, the mass of the blood increases by more than 50%. The amount of weight may vary based on your pre-pregnancy weight. Apart from these impacts, the primary reasons for weight gain may be due to:

  • your uterus growth
  • your breasts enlargement
  • presence of amniotic fluid around the baby
  • the placenta grows larger
  • your body produces more blood
  • bone flexibility

Problems with Too Much Weight Gain

If a pregnant woman gains too much weight, it affects their health and increases the primary risk during labor by giving birth to an obese baby that may cause more health problems to the baby in the future, as well as other issues such as vaginal tearing, excess bleeding, cesarean delivery. Remember, excess pregnancy weight can also make it more challenging for the mother to lose weight post-delivery. This extra weight may be retained throughout your life and cause many difficulties.

As your body weight impacts your pregnancy, it is necessary to monitor your weight throughout your pregnancy, else you may face complications like:

  • Gestation diabetics
  • High blood pressure
  • Cesarean section birth
  • Stillbirth

Managing Your Healthy Pregnancy Weight Gain

Discuss with your doctor

You may discuss this with your doctor while visiting for a regular check-up and get advice for healthy weight gain during pregnancy. Some women may feel anxious about their body weight, therefore it is necessary to know how much weight is average for a healthy and safe pregnancy. Your doctor may also refer a dietician for accurate information and tips to be followed during pregnancy.

Monitor your body weight from early pregnancy

You can track weight gain during pregnancy. Monitoring your body weight may help to maintain a healthy weight and to keep it on track. Use a pregnancy weight tracker and start recording weight from early pregnancy as possible.

Every pregnancy is different and varies from woman to woman, so the amount of weight gain might be not the same.

Attention to eating healthy foods

You may not gain more weight during the first trimester, because you may experience food aversions due to the discomforts of early pregnancy symptoms. However, from the following trimesters, you may require more food energy as per the changes that occur inside your body and for the development of your baby as well.

Hence the nutrient requirement increases in the form of folate, calcium, iodine, and iron-rich foods. Make sure you eat the right amount of pregnancy-safe and nutritious diet that includes fresh fruits, vegetables, wholegrain cereals, legumes, eggs, lean meat, fish, and low-fat dairy products as you should pay more attention to the nutritional quality of food eaten during pregnancy.

Exercise daily

You should be active and stress-free during your pregnancy.

You should consult your doctor before starting your exercise routines, such as walking, swimming, stationary cycling, and other pregnancy-specific exercises. You can do moderate exercise that benefits easy labor.
