Early Weeks of a New Mom

Becoming a new mom is a time of major transition. By this time, both you and your partner may focus mostly on your baby without caring about your health and needs. But it is necessary to take care of yourself as well. Not only you but your partner may also get involved in caring for your baby from birth. Here are the requirements from your partner when you are in the early weeks after delivery.

  • help your partner by spending time with her while your baby is breastfeeding
  • you may take your baby during the night for feeding
  • getting lactation consultant advice if your partner has any concerns about breastfeeding
  • provide emotional, mental, and physical support and encouragement
  • make nutrient-rich food and snacks
  • baby’s nappies and dress change 
  • cuddling your baby
  • doing household chores when required

Taking Care of Yourself

You may think you should spend your whole day caring for your newborn but still, it is essential to take care of yourself as well.


During the first few months, you may feed your baby frequently day and night, and your body is recovering from childbirth. Hence it is recommended to gain energy by taking rest, it is good to use the time when your baby sleeps. At least try to have a proper sleep once during the day.


You may start doing postnatal exercises including abdomen workouts after consulting with your doctor about your body condition. 

  • Lie on your side bending your knees slightly
  • Relax your tummy and breathe in and out gently
  • Squeeze out your pelvic floor for regular intervals. Hold for a count of 10 and then gently release. Repeat the same 10 times

Remember, you should not do strainful exercises until you are six weeks old. Along with these exercises, you can walk every day which helps to reduce your body weight.

Eating properly

Eating nutritious food is most important for your health. It is normal to gain weight after delivery, however, if you want to lose weight, you may try doing exercises. Your new born get the required nutrients from your breast milk feed, hence it is essential to eat the food rich in calcium, iron, protein, and zinc that helps to promote good health and nourishment for your baby. Relax and enjoy your food for easy digestion and avoid fried foods which may affect the baby’s health. Generally, if you are exclusively breastfeeding, a healthy diet is necessary. Breastfeeding may reduce your weight as some of the fats in your body helps to produce milk. Hence make sure to eat the right healthy food and take care of yourself.
